PERI "Formworking Machine" for World''s Largest Monolithic Tunnel

In the year 2000 the Øresund Project will link Denmark and Sweden with a four-lane motorway and double-track railway. In addition to two bridge approaches, an elevated bridge and an artificial island, an undersea tunnel is planned, which will be the biggest in the world in terms of volume.

PERI GmbH Weissenhorn´s extensive experience of constructing monolithic tunnels enabled the company to beat 15 competing international tenders. All of the planning, fabrication, transportation and assembly was accomplished in just eight months.

  • Two bridge approaches, an elevated bridge, an artificial island and an undersea tunnel is planned.
    The tunnel is the biggest in the world in terms of volume.
    PERI formwork, scaffolding and tie systems are being used in the production of the bridge deck panels and the prefabrication of the monolithically concreted tunnel segments.
    Construction technique
    For the first time in tunnelling, the cantilever launching method used for bridges since the 60s is being employed.
    Two stationary lines produced a total of twenty 176 m long tunnel elements. These were cast in eight separate 22.20 m segments.
    The formwork
    The segments were concreted in two hydraulically operated formwork assemblies, each consisting of one base, two outside and five tunnel forms, four guide girders, various temporary foundations and two stopends.
    As with cantilever launching of a bridge, eight segments were concreted and launched in succession. The base and outside forms were stationary.
