Poured Weekly and Moved Independently

As part of the B 17 national highway, the Schleifenstrasse ring road has considerably eased the congestion in the centre of Augsburg and thus increased the quality of residential life in the area. The last part of the route, designed to handle approximately 35,000 vehicles a day as of 2004, consists of a 380 m long tunnel. This cut-and-cover tunnel was constructed in an excavation supported by overlapping bored piles and sheet pilings.

To ensure water impermeability, the tunnel cross-section consists of a closed frame construction and is designed with waterproof reinforced concrete. The base and walls were constructed monolithically (i.e. poured in one piece) thus avoiding the need for construction joints.

In close cooperation with the contractor, Ed. Züblin AG, PERI engineers drafted the detailed performance specifications for this project and, based on these requirements, designed an economical formwork carriage. This was divided into the following structural components: launching beam, carriage with internal formwork, stopends for the base chases and bulkhead. Construction crews were able to comfortably achieve the planned weekly cycle of 10 m casting segments.
