Herzogberg Tunnel, A2 Motorway, Austria
Economical and Rentable for Individual Projects Tunnel Formwork Carriage with PERI Standard Components
The A2 motorway runs through a mountainous terrain and required a number of civil engineering structures along its route. This included constructing a 1,956 m long tunnel through the Herzogberg mountain.
PERI engineers designed a formwork carriage solution which would economically face the 48 m long, 12.48 m wide and 7.26 m high emergency bay in the middle of the tunnel. The system consisted of 90% rentable standard components.
The supporting structure and arched formwork could easily be adapted to the additional 3 m cross-section width. This was carried out by readjusting the formwork elements to conform to the new radius and adding an infill element without affecting site traffic operations.
The formwork carriage units were customised to handle the designated concreting cycle lengths of 2 x 12 m, 2 x 6 m and the broader centre segment of 1 x 12 m. The arched formwork consisting of GT 24 lattice girders and GRV articulated walers was preassembled on the ground and then lifted and positioned on the supporting structure. The foldable elements on the sides, which were assembled as a single-sided brace frame construction, were then mounted on the mobile supporting structure together with the arched formwork.

Markus Viertler Site Manager ”The PERI tunnel formwork carriage could be easily moved from section to section. In addition, the flexible PERI system provided an economical adaptation to the changed crosssection. Not only this, but the support given by the PERI supervisor during assembly, commissioning and conversion was exemplary!”
