CTRL Contract 240, Barrington Road Vent Shaft, Barking, East London, United Kingdom
A Wall of Props provides temporary support
The construction of twin-bore running tunnels, 4.7 km long, together with ventilation shafts and headhouses located at Barrington Road and Woodgate Road forms part of the £7bn Channel Tunnel Rail Link project. The Barrington Road project comprises two shafts, one of which is the main ventilation shaft and the second, a temporary auxiliary shaft.
The Barrington Road vent shaft is rectangular and measures 19.80 x 14.60 m and 35 m deep. The confined working area was a major factor influencing the choice of falsework and formwork systems for walls, slabs and soffits. Main contractor, Costain Skanska Bachy Joint Venture, specified PERI aluminium HD 200 props, TRIO and MULTIPROP systems as they offered maximum adaptability using a minimum of standard components and, being lightweight, were easy to handle. A major factor when working in the tight confines of this project.
A total of 90 HD 200 high load props, each designed with a safe working load of 200 kN, were used at 400 mm centres to support a load of 330 kN per metre of wall above, with a resultant load of 132 kN per prop. Used up to heights of 8 m they formed a temporary support wall so that construction could progress higher up the shaft.
