Tunnel by-pass, Flüelen, Switzerland
Four tunnel casting lengths in only 9 days
The 22 m long arched tunnel for installation of the ventilation plant runs transversely to the actual tunnel route of the bypass.
Typically, these so-called cavern cross-sections of this order of magnitude are built in two to three stages – firstly, the arched side walls in two stages and then the arched slab. However, in order to construct the inner ring in the very short time of only four weeks (including the formwork assembly), the TUF consortium decided in favour of the PERI technical solution. This was comprised of a tunnel formwork construction which allowed the concreting of a complete crosssection in one pour. As only four stages were to be completed – and due to cost reasons – this could be carried out without the need of integrated hydraulic equipment.
After a problem-free assembly time of just three weeks, site crews were able to construct the four stages, with section lengths of 5.50 m, in only nine working days. The short stripping phase of about seven days brought the construction phase to a successful end for all concerned.
