Athens, Greece, Construction for the Olympic Games:

Fast system equipment for tight schedules

After 108 years, the Olympic Games are returning to its spiritual home in 2004 with different sporting events taking place in and around Athens.

This has resulted in large developments being carried out involving enormous investment. Some of these investments include new underground rail routes, a new international airport, a modern motorway system and other major roads, hospitals, the biggest athletes village in the history of the Olympic Games as well as a range of impressive sporting facilities.

Since 1999 PERI had its own subsidiary in Greece and has successfully been contributing to the realization and modernization of 23 different Olympic sports venues by supplying engineering services and system devices. Some of them are described here.

Använda PERI system
  • DOMINO väggform
  • RUNDFLEX Rundform
  • TRIO 330
  • HD 200 Triangelstöd för tunga laster
  • ST 100 Stapeltorn
  • TRIO
  • MULTIPROP
  • Olympic village
For the Olympic village, a completely new district was created in the open countryside to the north of Athens. Accommodation for about 17,500 athletes has been designed according to passive house standards with high thermal insulation. Despite the extremely tight construction schedules, the high demands on the various plan views, wall heights and units have been fulfilled using TRIO, DOMINO and RUNDFLEX for walls and pillars as well as MULTIFLEX and SKYDECK for the slabs.

    Main Press Centre
With an area of more than 52,000 m², this modern building complex is the largest of its kind in the history of the Olympic Games. For the walls in the basement area, singlefaced formwork with DOMINO wall panels mounted on SB1 brace frames were used. Forming lifting units made it possible to finish the cycles with only a few crane lifts and bring them quickly to the next section. Depending on their availability, TRIO and DOMINO panels were used for the pillars. Even for cross-sections of up to 1.20 x 1.20 m where the DOMINO system was used no through anchors were needed.

    International Broadcasting Centre
The extremely tight schedule for the construction of the largest broadcasting centre worldwide required a quick panel formwork system such as the TRIO 330. Materials supplied by the contractors responsible for the building of the shell was complemented by “just in time” deliveries from PERI so that during peak periods, more than 1,700 m² of TRIO 330 – extended to a concrete height of 7.00 m in the areas of the staircases and elevator cores – was used to ensure fast construction process.

    Weightlifting Stadium
The freely-spanned roof structure is based on enormous steel lattice girders, which had to be assembled by means of a suitable shoring system. The supporting height, the high loads and the heavy wind forces as well as the complicated contact surface needed extensive static calculations. The combination of HD 200 heavy-duty props with the MULTIPROP system fulfilled the prerequisites of quick assembly and removal. The possibility to lift complete units by means of a crane in order to support further lattice girders matched the time schedule perfectly.

    Canoe/Kajak Slalom Centre
A reinforced concrete basin forms the basis of an artificial waterway for the 350 m long course. A system of highcapacity pumps provide the necessary water turbulence.
The shoring to erect the formwork for the water-carrying bridge was put together from 299 stacking towers ST 100 with a height of 3.74 m. Accurately-designed and prefabricated VARIO panels were used for the inclining side walls and cantilevers of the complicated cross-section.
Through this, erection times were reduced and the required concrete surfaces realised.
