ACS Customised Construction
For 100 m Long Cantilevered Wing Roof

With the design of this spectacular structure, architect Santiago Calatrava has defied the basics of conventional architecture. Three different construction elements, which he described as “wings”, “nut” and “sail”, characterize the 58 m high building. The concert hall has been designed to seat an audience of over 2,000.

Due to the slender and unusual form, the use of concrete for the realisation of the structure was inevitable. A wide range of formwork expertise was required: from simple TRIO panel formwork for the foundations, climbing formwork for symmetricallyarranged round and curved sail-like walls, to an unusual special construction – on the basis of ACS self-climbing technology – for the approx. 100 m long self-supporting roof assembly.

A steel construction with four longitudinal girders formed the basic structure of the massive “wing roof” and was braced with trussed frameworks. This steel skeleton was covered with reinforced concrete which presented construction crews with a difficult task: climbing formwork had to operate crane-independently, an architectural concrete finish was required and working platforms needed to be horizontally adjusted in every position. In addition, conversion work on the formwork elements was to be kept to a minimum and the maximum load-bearing capacity of the wings, including the loads from the steel and concrete, had to be taken into consideration.

From the first to last concreting cycle, this special formwork carriage functioned extremely well and, due to the cooperation between PERI and the contractor, the best possible results were achieved according to the specifications. In spite of the complex requirements throughout the project, a high level of safety was provided for construction crews at all times.
