High, Diversely Angled Wall Areas
with Architectural Concrete Surfaces
With the Casa da Musica project, the city of Porto has taken into account the need to have an appropriate venue for classical music concerts. The building – whose name literally means “House of Music” – was designed by the Dutch architect, Rem Koolhaas.
Different kinds of architectural concrete surfaces, which feature a regular join pattern and tie positions, characterize this prestigious and high profile project. The realization of the architectural requirements presented a number of challenging tasks which demanded a high level of technical expertise from the contractor as well as selecting the most suitable formwork system.
The engineers from PERI Portugal developed a formwork solution based on the VARIO girder wall formwork system with VT 20K girders. This meant that the best possible adaptability to the geometrical specifications could be achieved.
The fixing of the climbing scaffold was matched to the required tie arrangement and the MULTIPROP system was used to transfer the concreting loads in the sloping wall areas. Due to the fast assembly possibilities and high load-bearing capacity, this had a very positive effect on construction progress: 5 m long casting segments were completed in the shortest cycle time possible. At no time was there any risk of not maintaining the very tight construction schedule.
