Spree Café, DomAquarée Complex, Berlin, Germany
Special Formwork for Excellent Concrete Finishes Accurate Pre-Fabrication and Delivered On Schedule
Located opposite the old cathedral in downtown Berlin, the DomAquarée office, hotel and business complex was officially opened in December 2003. This new promenade on the banks of the River Spree is also the home of the Spree Café. Trees will be planted along the promenade and, in order for these to grow on the concrete slab of the café, construction of elaborate reinforced concrete funnels were necessary. They consist of 3.40 m high concrete pipes with internal diameters of 1.16 m which are placed over same-sized openings in the bottom slab. On the top connection point, there is a mushroom-shaped enlargement with a 4.00 m inner diameter. Trees are planted in the soil-filled, funnel-shaped pipes and are watered from below using the Spree’s ground water supply.
To comply with a tight construction schedule and limited working space, PERI pre-assembly specialists provided a cost-effective solution for forming the funnel constructions. The pre-assembled segments were delivered as required to the site and then easily put together by the construction crews.
Through the cooperation between contractors and PERI engineers, practical solutions were developed to ensure that all deadlines were met. Efficient labour planning allowed the contractors to fulfill the required quality standards, in particular the architectural concrete finishes.
