Cost-effective Development
Through Shortened Construction Time
The port of Mejillones, near Antofagasta in the north of Chile, is being expanded and will eventually become the largest port on the Pacific coast. Most of the locally mined materials are shipped from here and it is also the focal point of the brisk freight trade from Bolivia and Argentina to and from Asia. Developing Terminal 1 required an investment of approx. USD 120 million and the completion of this initial development means the port now has three landing stages with a handling capacity of 2 million tonnes per year. The project design took into consideration further expansion to include a fourth mooring facility which would increase freight traffic volume to approx. 3.5 million tonnes annually.
For the realisation of the first construction phase, PERI engineers created formwork solutions for the so-called mole (cover plate with beams on driven piles), for the walls on the steel piling construction (underwater climbing formwork) as well as the breakwaters (cylindrical-shaped climbing formwork which was also designed for concreting under water).
The biggest challenge for PERI was to develop technically-sophisticated and cycle-oriented formwork systems and solutions which allowed a reduction in both construction time and labour costs.
