Construction for the Olympic Games
PERI Greece Construction for the Olympic Games
After 108 years, the 2004 Olympic Games are returning to their spiritual home. Between 13 and 29 August, more than 300 Olympic gold medals will be awarded in 28 different sporting categories and 37 disciplines. Among the 200,000 accredited participants, 10,500 athletes from more than 201 nations are taking part in this spectacle. Over 6,000 officials, 2,500 technicians and 45,000 volunteers will ensure that the Olympic Games will take place without any problems. Different sporting events are taking place in and around Athens. This has resulted in large developments being carried out involving enormous investment. Some of these include new subway routes, a new international airport, a modern motorway system and other major roads, hospitals, the biggest athletes´ village in the history of the Olympic Games as well as a range of impressive sporting facilities. Since 1999, PERI has had its own subsidiary in Greece and has been successfully contributing to the realization and modernization of 23 different Olympic sporting venues by supplying engineering services and product systems. Some of them are described here.

The Nikaia weightlifting stadium is located in the south-west part of the Attica province and has been designed for 5,000 spectators. Apart from the actual competition arena, the design concept took into consideration training and warm up areas as well as medical facilities. For the building´s shell construction, PERI TRIO elements with cycle heights up to 5.40 m on PERI KG climbing scaffold were selected. This meant contractors could efficiently form the high walls and facade sections. The 18 m high slab construction with beams was realised using ST 100 stacking towers with safe load transfers of up to 16.5 t per tower. |

For the canoe-kayak slalom centre in Ellinikon, Athens, a reinforced concrete basin forms the basis of an artificial waterway for the 350 m long course. A system of high-capacity pumps provide the necessary water turbulence. ST 100 stacking towers and prefabricated PERI VARIO GT 24 elements were used for the bottom slab, inclined side walls and cantilevers of the water-carrying bridge. Optimally planned use of the PERI system components significantly contributed to the accurate and high quality construction as well as ensuring work continued according to schedule. |

Basketball Stadium, Ellinikon, Athens A former Olympic Airways aircraft hangar at Ellinikon Airport has been converted into a modern basketball arena. An important part of the reconstruction comprised of the reinforced concrete work. Here, different high wall and wall sections had to be erected in various areas of the stadium. For assembling the steel grandstands, 24 pairs of sheer walls of up to 13.50 m high were formed. Parallel to this, wall sections up to 22 m high in the outer area were needed. The contractors found the perfect climbing formwork solution in PERI TRIO on FB180 folding platforms which allowed great dimensional accuracy and excellent concrete finishes. |

A cost-effective falsework solution was required for the athletics stadium which provided a suitable shoring system during the assembly phase for the massive steel trusses of the roof construction. Static calculations were even more difficult because of the supporting scaffold height, high dead loads, strong local wind as well as the complicated geometry of the base area.
Using a combination of HD 200 heavy duty props and the MULTIPROP system, PERI engineers at the Athens and Thessaloniki offices fulfilled the client´s requirements regarding fast assembly and dismantling procedures. In addition, moving complete units by crane for supporting other trusses saved valuable time which helped alleviate a very tight construction schedule.
The site management were extremely satisfied with construction progress and the PERI solution. Project manager, George Foutris: “PERI MULTIPROP and HD 200 systems make an ideal combination ensuring that the high vertical loads can be safely transferred in spite of the complicated geometry of the steel trusses. Based on the experience gained during this project, I consider PERI to be a formwork supplier which can support us during such challenging jobs through its technical expertise and large delivery potential.” |
