Saaletal Motorway Bridge, Hollstadt, Germany
Delivered On Schedule, Inexpensive and Dimensionally Accurate Assembly Service for Customised Pier Head Formwork
As part of the A 71 Erfurt – Schweinfurt motorway project, a new 690 m long bridge spans the Saale valley in the picturesque Franconia region. Eight pairs of reinforced concrete piers, each with a special head construction, support the twin superstructures carrying the carriageways.
PERI was commissioned to provide the preassembled pier head formwork. Designed by engineers at the technical office and put together by a specialist assembly team at the company´s headquarters in Weissenhorn, this cost-efficient solution allowed very accurate pier head construction to take place.
The pier head formwork consisted of two bulkheads and two longitudinal elements. Forming timber, vertically-positioned to the lattice girders, were an advantage when assembling the elements (without stiffeners) and for transferring the loads (less bracing). 10 cm wide strips formed the rough-sawn plywood covering which provided the required concrete surface finish.
The section installations for forming the superstructure was assembled at the same time as the first piers were constructed. The longitudinal partly pre-stressed box girders – formed with PERI components – were concreted cycle by cycle so that they could be positioned over the piers after the incremental launching. The design of the casting pit, as well as the formwork use on the pier shafts, was carried out by the contractors.
